Excerpts from the Free State of Menard by N. H. Pierce, pg 171-172: "...."Aunt" Roday Ward....While she was a slave until the age of about 12, she was never sold as a slave, living with the family of Captain E. A. Stanfield on the San Marcos River in the Prairie Lea community. Mrs. Stanfield set her free at the end of the Civil War. (cut)...She was the widow of Henry Ward...(cut) "I've raised eight children but all of them are dead except one son, Solomon Smith," she says. You see Ise been married four times, for the Bible says man was not made to live alone. My four husbands are in their graves." (cut) NOTE: While I strive for accuracy in all transcriptions, please be advised that typing errors may be present. I would suggest you always verify my online information with a copy of the actual record.
