Menard County Texas

Oscar O. Splittgerber

Oscar Otto Splittgerber was born July 19, 1836 in Germany. He reportedly came to America at about 18 years of age...and married Martha Shellenberger-Kingston about 1860. He is said to have gone to Mexico in the 1860's, but he is found in the 1870 Menard County, Texas census with his 28 year old wife, Martha, his 7 year old daughter, Fannie and his step-son, 11 year old William Kingston.

Oscar and Martha had 3 children: Fannie Ann Splittgerber who married William Benjamin Ellis, Samuel O. Splittgerber who married Texanna Alexander and Charles Splittgerber who married Tillie Meir.

Oscar died November 15, 1890 and is buried in the Splittgerber/Ellis Cemetery in Menard County, Texas.

You can read more about Oscar O and Martha Shellenberger-Kingston-Splittgerber in the Menard County Anthology-A History, page 602.

Splitgarber Stage Stand

Among the few remaining historical sites left in Menard county is the old Splitgarber Stage Stand which is about six and one-half miles west of Menard on the Ft. McKavett highway. The Stage Stand was built in the fall and winter of 1869-1870 by Ben and Slaughter Fickland. It was on the route between San Antonio and El Paso and other points west. This historical stand is now little more than crumbling ruins, but its deserted remains still give some connotation of its former use and history.
