Chaps

Courtesy Dr. Gianfranco Spellman

On display through February, 2005

American cowboys freely borrowed many Spanish terms from the original Spanish and later Mexican cowhands. For example, words such as vaquero, barbacoa and lazo were adapted to become "buckaroo," "barbecue" and "lasso." The word "chaps" comes from the Spanish word chaparreras, which were stout leather trousers used to protect the legs from brush and cacti. Because thorny or rough plants were part of the western landscape, cowboys often wore chaps while working.

This pair of chaps was made by Emil Toepperwein of Menardsville (Menard today) more than a century ago and can be found on the Museum's third floor Ranching exhibit area. Emil Toepperwein was a leatherworker who not only made chaps, but also crafted saddles, holsters, harnesses and bridles. He was the first cousin of famous marksman Adolph Toepperwein.

Notes: The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum was founded as a non-collecting institution. Museum exhibits on three floors showcase over 700 historical objects on loan from more than 100 museums, libraries, archives and individuals. With their support, they bring the Story of Texas to life through the ongoing process of changing historical objects in the permanent exhibits as loans are returned and new loans are received. This means that there is always something new for you to see at the Museum! See more HERE!

Wilensky's was a important part of Menard's history and I thought this might be of interest to anyone researching the Wilensky family. I originally tried to just add a link, but the pages kept changing at their site....if you want to know more about this, you will have to look for the item number on their site.

Due to the increasing amount of "spam" I'm receiving from email "harvesters", I only publish my email link in jpg form. I am sorry for any inconvenience this might cause you...but I'm really tired of the "advertising trash" that is filling up my email box..
