R. H. HICKEY HOME BURNS
Menard was aroused Sunday evening by the shooting of guns and everybody
rushed to Main street to see the Hickey home a mass of flames. The fire
started in the kitchen where Mr. Hickey had been cleaning his suit with
some gasoline a short time before. He had retired to his bed and was asleep
when the smell of smoke awakened him. He rushed to the kitchen throwing
open the door only to be met by a fog of smoke. He returned to the bedroom,
seized the children and carried them out and was also forced to carry
out his wife who had fainted. His furniture and household goods were an
entire loss. Insurance to the amount of $1,000.00 will almost cover it.
Although there was a strong east wind, hard work by the men who had appeared
upon the scene prevented the spread of the flames to neighboring houses.
