Menard County Texas

San Luis de las Amarillas Presidio

Notes on Presidio

The San Luis de las Amarillas Presidio or Presidio de San Saba was built to protect the Mission down river. Unfortunately, this didn't help the Mission when Indians looted and burned it in 1758. The Presidio remained until abt 1772 when it was abandoned.

When a growing Menard community began building homes and businesses, much of the Presidio ruins were used as materials.

In 1936, the Texas Centennial Commission rebuilt the Presidio. Unfortunately, the construction was not top grade and all that can be seen today is ruins. (see Presidio Then pics)

Located near the Menard County golf course, the Presidio has been the sight of many archeological digs in recent years.
