County Formation

Located in Central Texas, Menard County was home to the Santa Cruz de San Sabá Mission and San Luis de las Amarillas Presidio in the 1750's until Indian hostilities made it impossible to stay in the area.

In 1858, Menard County was formed from Bexar County by the state legislature, but the threat of Indian attacks delayed new settlement and caused many established residents to leave.

By 1866, the remaining residents failed to form a new government and it wasn't until 1871 that Menard finally elected their own officials and "Menardville" was named the county seat. (More Information)

History of County Name

Menard County was named in honor of Michel Branamour Menard (1805-1856), who was an early settler of Galveston, Tx.

Though several of his descendents have contacted me looking for information on Michel B. date, I have not located any records or documentation that would prove he was ever in this area.

I love genealogy..........and I love the kind people I've met in the years I've been working on my personal family history.

The first person who sent me some out of state records refused to let me pay her for her time and trouble. She told me to "pass the favor along" the next time I could help someone.....and that would be payment enough for her.

I've never forgotten that............and that's one of the reasons I volunteer for the Menard TXGenWeb site. She's also the reason I collect miscellaneous materials or take pictures at cemeteries that have nothing to do with my research.

So in honor of "passing it along", here are some items I've collected while traveling the counties. Sorry....I can't give you anymore information beyond what is posted....but maybe it will help someone else in their research.

Miscellaneous Items I've Collected

Calfcreek Cemetery, McCulloch Co., TX

Jordan Springs Cemetery, Brown Co., TX

Long Mountain Community Pictures, Mason Co., TX

Lynch or Cowboy Cemetery, outside of Albany, Shackelford Co, TX

Redcreek Cemetery, Kimble Co., TX

Have a Question or Comment About My Web Site?

Due to the increasing amount of "spam" I'm receiving from email "harvesters", I only publish my email link in jpg form. I am sorry for any inconvenience this might cause you...but I'm really tired of the "advertising trash" that is filling up my email box..
