1916 Marriage NewsMenard Messenger McDonald-Shafer Judge Scruggs united in holy wedlock Miss Alva Shafer and Exa McDonald, Tuesday. The contracting parties are from Rochelle.
Scott-Thomas Judge Scruggs performed the wedding ceremony for J. T. Scott and Miss Alice Thomas Saturday. Mr. Scott hails from San Saba. The Menard Messenger Westbrooks-Woolf Last Friday evening at eight o'clock in the city of Junction, Dan Westbrook and Miss Hallie Woolf were quietly married at the parsonage of a resident minister. The happy couple will make their home in Menard for the present. Miss Hallie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Woolf formerly of Menard and Dan is the son of our friend Bud. Reports had this young couple married three different times before they really had decided to do so and in fact we had their obituary all written up and it was an exceedingly nice one as they deserve, but Dan told us that he would let us know when it really happened. He didn't but Mrs. Woolf did, so we are announcing that the expected has really happened. The many friends of this popular young couple in this and adjoining counties extend their congratulations. The Menard Messenger WEDDINGS Kiehne-Crowell Last Thursday evening Florent Kiehne and Miss Winnie Crowell stole a march on their many relatives and friends by being quietly married at the Rev. Boatman home, only the Boatman family and Harris Maddox witnessing the ceremony. Florent is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Kiehne and is working in his father’s market. The bride is one of Menard’s popular young ladies coming from one of the oldest families of Menard county. They will make their home with Mr. and Mrs. Kiehne. The Messenger joins their many friends in extending congratulations. Owens-Harrington Last Monday morning between the hours of eight and nine o’clock, Judge Scruggs pronounced the words which united in marriage W. B. Owens and Miss Edoucia Harrington, both of Eldorado. The happy couple drove over Sunday and left immediately after the ceremony for their home. Tuberville-Holland On June the first at high noon at the home of the bride, Mr. V. W. Turberville and Miss Mary E. Holland were married, the Rev. Richard Mercer reading the Episcopal marriage service including the ring ceremony. The wedding march was played by Miss Reid of Junction. Only the intimate friends of both families were present. The groom is a ranchman at Llano and is a man of gentlemanly appearance and education and has business interest in several parts of the state. The bride is a lady of wide acquaintance, well and favorably known in Menard, Kimble and Sutton counties, very popular and talented in many ways, making friends and binding them to her as with steel. They will make their home at Llano. May their love to each other be as strong as cedar on earth and their prosperity successful as a palm in paradise. Delong-Goldwire County Commissioner James H. DeLong of Christoval, put one over his friends and the press by quietly stealing away Sunday and leading Miss Lydia Goldwire, also of Christoval, to Hymen’s alter. The happy event took place at the home of the bride’s mother, the Rev. A. J. Barton, superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League of Texas, speaking the words that linked the lives of Commissioner DeLong and Miss Goldwire together until death them do part. Both the groom and the bride have a host of friends in San Angelo and Tom Green county, whose best wishes go with them as they journey down the road of connubial bliss.--San Angelo Weekly Standard. Mrs. DeLong is well known in Menard, having acted as governess for two years on the G. F. Strickland ranch and while here made many warm friends who join in extending congratulations. The Menard Messenger Callan-White Friday, Houston Callan and Miss Nellie White announced to the public that they were married folks and had been since July 8th when Houston and Miss White made a trip to San Angelo and were married by a preacher at that place. They certainly slipped one over on their friends and proved that a woman can keep a secret if she wants to. Miss White is one of Menard's most popular society girls while Houston is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Callan. We extend congratulations and wish them every happiness in their wedded life. That is, we wish them that now, but we are going to change our mind if Houston doesn't come in and subscribe for the great family weekly. We promise them that they will find all sorts of good advice therein. The Menard Messenger (page 1) Murchison-Hubbard A wire was received from Clayton Murchison that he has joined the ranks of the benedicts and was married Sunday at San Antonio to Miss Willie May Hubbard whom he met at the Lofton home near here while on her visit this summer. Clayton recently returned to Austin with his mother, Mrs. Anna Murchison and sister where they were attending college. The bride and groom return to Menard where Clayton has a position on the A. H. Murchison ranch. Crowell-Henderson Last week, Wednesday, J. D. Scruggs performed the wedding ceremony for J. C. "Jimmie" Crowell and Miss Willie Henderson. Jimmie has a good position with T. P. Russell o the ranch and we wish them the happiness they deserve and undoubtedly will have. The Menard Messenger MARRIAGE LICENSES FOR DECEMBER Licenses were issued during December to the following parties; December is the last month of 1916 (Leap year). Dec. 15 Asa Lee, Lona Davis.
