General Abner DoubledayGalveston Daily News The Tour of The Forts by A.H.B. March 25---(excerpt)....Fort McKavett is a good deal older than Concho, for it was constructed in 1852, and was called by the name of a brave young hero, Lieut. McKavett, who fell at Monterey. It was abandoned from 1860 to 1868, and fell into ruins. Fort McKavett is commanded by that veteran and scientific soldier, General Abner Doubleday-a gentleman who, distinguished as he was on the field, is even more distinguished as a strategist and military commentator. (cut)...Mrs. General Doubleday is famous for her accomplishments and talents-graces that would shine and have shone in the saloons of beauty, wit and learning, but which are for the present set upon a high hill by the side of the San Saba, where they may shine like the Scriptural candle, but where there are not many to enjoy the light. Gen. Doubleday, though a devout son of the church, does not believe in the new gospel of peace that the Department is preaching to the Indians'-an opinion in which the Galveston News heartily concurs. The General believes in a vigorous war policy when the red man commits an offense, and thinks as I do, that the shortest path to a lasting peace lies in administering vigorous punishment to stealing and murdering Indians.
