Ft. McKavett Breeze, August 10th, 1889: When you come to town tell us the news, when you don't come to town send us the news. Mrs. Jas. Hagerlund is back among her friends at McKavett, and we are pleased to know is much improved in health. Last Monday Frank Large bought from J. M. Taylor of Sutton county, 400 head of muttons at $2 per head. Frank is negotiating with other parties for more. A Mr. Wright, from Comanche county, was here this week looking at the country, and will probably stock a ranch somewhere in this country. Mr. S. S. Ramsey, of Cottonwood, Callahan county, spent several days here last week visiting his daughters, Mrs. T. A. Rudd and Miss Dey Ramsey. He was highly impressed with our country. Johnnie Carpenter, from the sheep ranch of Berry Bros., was in town Thursday and says the range excellent and sheep in fine condition. Messrs. Norton and D. H. Palmer, of Callahan county, were here this week looking at the country and were well pleased. Don't be astonished if you hear of them locating ranches here in the near future. All parties indebted to J. T. Wiggins & Co. or Dr. J. T. Wiggins will please come forward at once and settle. Accounts are in the hands of Col. T. A. Gay for collection. We have accommodated the people and now must have our money. Respectfully, J. T. Wiggins & Co. Brady City has a bank. Why not Fort McKavett do likewise? This was once a flourishing government post, and it has been stated that it would been made a permanent one had it not been too far distant from the railroad. As that is a thing of the past, the land has gone into the hands of private individuals, it will only be a matter of time when this will be THE town of West Texas. Capital will be invested here; new buildings will go up; different branches of business will open up; and, as here are found the best water facilities in this section, there is no doubt but that a woolen factory will be established as soon as the country becomes better known to the outside world. Miss Maggie Johnston of Menardville, is visiting McKavett and is the guest of Miss Sophia Stucken. M. V. Bridges has been appointed postmaster at Mason. SAN ANGELO STANDARD--C. C. Jones, for the past four years with F. Mayer of McKavett is in the city. In a few days he will take a trip west and south in the ????? of Schwartz & Raas and Hahn ?? & Rueff. Bird & Meitz, Monday, Shipped to the James Campbell Co., three car loads of sheep for W. J. Glass; on Wednesday for John Raney, of Junction City, five cars of steers; and the same day one car of steers and on car of cows for Thos. Ball of McKavett; and two cars of steers and cows mixed, for A. J. Sikes of the Llano. The San Antonio Department of the Live Stock Journal, says: "Col. Wm. L. Black, of Fort McKavett, now one of the best known leaders in all movements looking to the advancement of ranch interests in all its branches; passed through the city Monday on his return home from a visit to the ranch of his friend, Alonzo Millett, LaSalle county. The colonel has taken hold in earnest in his efforts to get a protective duty put back on hides of all kinds, horns, and all other parts of slaughtered animals, which will tend to rais the value of live stock of every class. With a pull together this would be of easy accomplishment in the present congress." ESTRAY NOTICE Taken up by Commissioner Burbank and estrayed for the county, one bay horse 10 years old. Right forefoot and right hindfoot and single white, about 15 hands high, branded U. S. left shoulder, I C and L S on left thigh. "Mr. Wm. L. Black accompanied his mother and sister as far as San Angelo, this week, on their return home to Kirkwood, Mo. They have been visiting here the past two or three weeks." Mr. Tom Rudd left here this week with a small herd of one, two, three and four year old steers, which he will deliver to M. B. Pulliam of Tom Green county. Mr. Rudd contracted these cattle to Mr. Pulliam some time ago to be delivered today the 10th. The price paid was $7, $11, $15, and $16. Messrs. J. Q. and Chas. Adams spent a couple of days in town this week, and gave a glowing account of their section. They have just added eight sections more land to their Middle Valley ranch, and have the steam driller just left town at work, and soon will have plenty of water as well as grass. Mrs. Jno. Erskine left Tuesday for Mason on a visit to friends, but at Menardville she was takne sick, and was unable to continue her journey. Mr. Erskine was notified Thursday and took the stage that evening. It is reported that Mrs. Erskine has pneumonia but we trust the report is false and that she will soon be able to go on her visit. Yesterday (Friday) the carpenters- J. G. Regenier and H. J Kried contractors-completed their work on the new saloon building of F. Mayer and now it is ready for the painter. It is iron clad outside from top to bottom. The inside is finished up in the most artistic style, shows plainly the ability of the master workmen. The finishing work was managed by Kried and evidences the fact that he has been there before, and is a competent workman. Mr. Mayer now has a house to be proud of, and no doubt he is. San Angelo Standard-- Mr. Hunnicutt and family, of Shackleford county, passed through town yesterday in wagons, for South Concho, where Mr. H. will look at Tom Rudd's ranch with the purpose of buying if it suits him. If Mr. H. makes the investment he will stock the ranch with 1000 Shackleford cattle and settle among us. He also says that two more stockmen from Shackleford county with two herds of sheep are en route to this county looking for ranches.--The Standard is mistaken about Mr. Hunnicut being on his way to South Concho to look at Tom Rudd's ranch with a purpose of buying, as Mr. Rudd's ranch is not on South Concho, but only fifteen miles northwest from McKavett, and besides Mr. Rudd does not want to sell. Mr. John Hunnicutt, of Shackleford county, last week, spent two of three days in McKavett with Mr. Rudd and family, looking at, as he terms it, "the best stock country on earth," with the view of locating somewhere near McKavett. The two gentlemen with sheep are also coming here to locate.
