Leg Amputated
Mr. L. F. Barksdale, of Menard County who has been here visiting at the
home of his sister-in-law Mrs. Holland, had the misfortune of it becoming
necessary to have his left leg amputated about the knee last Friday. He
was just recovering from a siege of pneumonia when condition of his physical
system made very necessary the operation to save his life. The operation
was performed by Dr. Anderson of the Brady Sanitarium, Dr. Davis of Menard
and Drs. Stone and Wright of this place, and took place at the Holland
home here. Mr. Barksdale we are glad to learn is now getting along nicely.---Junction

The venerable W. L. Black whose hair is white by the frost of many winters
has been spending several winters at the old homestead the guest of his
son Charles and family. The Colonel is a man of wide information, pleasing
appearance and beautiful manners. He has left and will spend the remainder
of the winter among his most elegant daughters.

Mr. Alexander, one of our pioneers, left last week for an extended visit
in New Mexico.
Man Charged With Making Disloyal Remarks
August Eckert was arrested last week under the disloyalty law. The County
Judge placed his bond at $1,000 but he was unable to make bond so the
local Council of Defense turned him loose agreeing to stand good for him
to appear before the next Grand Jury.
Eckert had been put in class three by the exemption board but when the
reclassification order was received, he and others were changed to class
two Eckert lost his temper and is alleged to have said that this was not
his country and that he wouldn't fight for it. Dr. Leggett, chairman of
the exemption board filed the charge against him.

Mrs. W. L. Watters and children of Ozona passed through here Friday on
their way to Rochelle to spend a few days visiting her father, R. A. Sellman
and family, there. They expect to return through here Wednesday on their
way home.

Ft. McKavett News
Mrs. Frank Pullman and Sam left for Brawley, California, on Wednesday
to join her husband. She was known formerly as Callie Danley having spent
her entire life here. By her sterling qualities she will be missed by
a host of friends.

Geo. Grandstaff who has been a very sick man for some time was taken
to Temple Friday in the hope that an operation might help him. He was
accompanied by his mother Mrs. E. Grandstaff and Wm Bevans.
Mrs. Belle Hensley returned home Saturday from Roswell, New Mexico with
a well developed case of the flue.

Mrs. Tom Waggoner and two little sons arrived home this week from Avent,
Oklahoma, where she visited her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Davis. She reports
the birth of a fine baby girl to Mr. and Mrs. Davis.

Ira Hawkins Dead
Mr. D. I. Hawkins died at his home in Ochiltree Monday, after a short illness with pneumonia. He was reared in this county and was for a number of years engaged in the drug business at Star, where he also served as postmaster. A few years ago he disposed of his business at Star and later located in Ochiltree and again engaged in the drug business. He was a man of high principles and all who him had full confidence in him.
The remains of Mr. Hawkins reached Goldthwaite on Wednesday night's train and were conveyed to the home of Mr. Lewis Hudson and from there to Center City for burial Thursday, the burial service being conducted by the Masons and attended by a large number from Goldthwaite, Star, Center City and other communities.
Mr. Hawkins leaves a wife and two children, together with other relatives and they have the sympathy of all who know of their bereavement.---Goldthwaite Herald
Mr. Hawkins is a brother of W. A. Hawkins of this city.

Roy Weaver
The remains of Roy Weaver, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Weaver of London were brought in Tuesday and taken to London for burial.

Russell Callan Shot
Russell Callan was shot twice by an oil man named Head while on his way to Ft. Worth last Wednesday morning. The shooting occurred near Stephensville and a charge was filed in that county against Head of an attempt to murder.
One bullet struck Russell in the shoulder and the other in the kidneys. He was taken on to Ft. Worth and placed in a hospital where and operation was immediately performed. At last reports he underwent the operation successfully and is now getting along nicely. The cause of the shooting is not known.
Bert Fleming Killed
Bert Fleming of Kimble County was killed in action October 12, in France. Bert was well known in Menard having many friends here who will learn with sorrow of his making the supreme sacrifice for his country.

Dr. W. L. Langford has moved to Menard this week from Ft. McKavett. The doctor has purchased the Herbert Mears property in South Menard. Doctor Langford is no stranger to the people of this community and we welcome him.
The remains of Mrs. L. A. Bannowsky of Roswell, New Mexico are expected in this week and the interment will be made in the London cemetery. Mrs. Bannowsky is the sister of Mrs. Hensley and Mrs. L. E. Miller.
