DEATH OF J. D. PETTIGREW
Last week, Wednesday night at his home in London, occurred the death of
J. D. Pettigrew, a pioneer of West Texas and a highly respected citizen
of this section. Mr. Pettigrew has been ailing for some time and his death
was not entirely unexpected by his friends and relatives. He was 89 years
old at the time of his death and came to this vicinity 40 years ago. He
was born in Arkansas and served faithfully with the Boys in Gray during
the Civil war. He was the father of thirteen children eight of whom are
living, four girls and four boys. The funeral services were held the following
day at the London cemetery, Marion Adams having charge. Mr. Pettigrew
leaves many friends who join with his family mourning his loss. Jim Pettigrew,
a son of the deceased, was called to his bedside and stayed until after
the funeral.
(Alicia's footnote: Ms Wyatt contacted me by email on Dec. 8, 1999
and provided the following information: "I just read the
1917 obituary for J. D. Pettigrew. Actually, his name was Israel Delaney
Pettigrew, and he still has grandchildren in this area".)
In the book: "Peace in the Valley-A Chronicle of Kimble County Cemeteries"
by Frederica Burt Wyatt, you will find the burial place of Israel D. Pettigrew
in the London Cemetery . The tombstone info states he was born May 3,
1827 and died January 25, 1917. Also buried there is Sally V. Hodges "wife
of I. D." born July 7, 1854 and died July 27, 1927.)

Mr. Patton was born Dec. 20, 1860 and was married to Miss Gussie Atkins
in 1882 at Action, Hood County, Texas. Thirteen children were born to
them, twelve of which are now living. He was a sincere Christian and member
of the Methodist church South which he joined at the early age of fifteen.
