AGED PIONEER BROUGHT HERE FOR BURIAL-

Mrs. Martha Ann Vaughn Brought to Menard and Laid at Rest

The remains of Mrs. Martha Ann Vaughn who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Noeguess, near Ozona, August 31st, at 2:30 o’clock, were brought to this city and interred in the local cemetery as she had requested. She as born in Lawrence county, Alabama , May 17, 1825 , and came to Texas in 1855 with her husband settling in San Saba county but only staying there a short time. They finally moved to Menard county in 1866 and made this their home until she moved away with her daughter in 1904.

The funeral services were held from the Methodist church, Thursday morning, Rev. J. H. Maxwell of Sonora having charge. The pall bearers were W. W. Lewis, C. B. Mason, A. H. Murchison, George Bradford, W. B. Ellis and J. D. Scruggs. The two daughters of the deceased, Mrs. Noeguess and Mrs. Winn, the latter from Rock Springs were both in attendance at the funeral.

The 90 years of Mrs. Vaughn’s life were eventful ones as were those of all of the early settlers in West Texas. She has told many of her early experiences among them tales of red skin atrocities. Often when the men were away from home the women made dummies and placed them on the porch to make the Indians think they were at home. And in those days steers were so cheap that cow boys would trade a steer for one common metal spur.

Mrs. Vaughn joined the Methodist church at the age of thirteen and was a faithful member. The two daughters of this estimable woman have the sympathy of everybody in their loss, a loss not only to them, but held in common by all who knew her and who came in touch with her magnificent Christian character.
