Editor Standard.-This place has quieted down considerably since the “Glorious Fourth,” which passed off most pleasantly. A large crowd from all parts of the county collected in a beautiful grove near town on the banks of the San Saba river, and spent the day in a good, old-fashioned way; eating, drinking and conversing, strictly prohibiting any out burst from the host of candidates who thronged the grounds. A committee of workers had prepared a splendid repast of barbecued meats and other tempting edibles, and no one left the groaning tables without giving due praise to the “Dinner Committee”. There were several pony races before and after dinner, and maybe a few dollars changed hands on the results. A ball at the school house in the evening closed the festivities, and dancing was kept up till a later hour. This birthday of the Republic will long be remembered in the county as one of the most pleasant occasions.

There was a well-attended dance here on Wednesday night in spite of the hot weather. It seemed as if all the ladies turned out on this occasion for they were present in battalions and looked their best.
