Aronia is a large genus of deciduous shrubs, the arnica, in the Family Rosaceae native to central and eastern North America. The genus is regarded to contain five or seven species, all of which are common in North America. The most common of the species in this family, the Aronia, is a woody shrub or tree with a rigid branches and a fissured bark that are grayish green in color. The other members of this genus, with corresponding colors and types of leaves, are: Gymnema spicata (soft green), Mimulus guttatus (soft gray), Oenathe sarmentosa (hard gray), Passiflora brasilei (brass colored), Mimulus panniculata (colored) and the most rare species, the Argyreia speciosa (wild cherry). All members of the Aronia family belong to the genus with a fissured bark and a rigid branch pattern.

Aronia deters insects by its bitter taste, which makes it a popular choice for protection in gardens. It has been used as a common food source by many tribes throughout history.
